Democratizing mathematical illustration

Abstract

Despite many advances, generating high-quality mathematical illustrations suitable for use in publications is still a specialized business regarded by many mathematicians as too daunting.  Existing tools may be not widely available, too technical, or insufficiently flexible. This is especially true for three-dimensional illustrations like the ones shown here. These images were produced using proprietary software, with considerable effort and many hacks, yet they still have some “bugs”. What can be done to improve the situation by developing tools specifically tailored to mathematicians?
